The International Association for the History of Transport, Traffic and Mobility (T
2M) was founded in 2003 to stimulate and support studies of the movement of people, things and ideas in all periods and societies in the past. T
2M is incorporated as a non-profit, interdisciplinary educational organization, originally based at the Technical University of Eindhoven in The Netherlands.
Our mission is the establishment of a collegial association of scholars, practitioners and concerned citizens to encourage and promote an understanding of the historical interaction between transport, traffic and the mobility of people, material objects and ideas. This includes the linkages between mobility systems and a wide range of social and cultural factors – e.g. politics and public policy, labor and business, science and technology, tourism and travel, media and the arts, and crucial questions of sustainability and the environment. Today transport history shares inter-disciplinary interests and methods with mobilities research, urban studies, geographies of mobility, and the study of media and communication.
The association invites participation by anyone sharing an interest in its activities. Membership of T
2M ensures a vital connection with like-minded individuals and institutions around the world. The association provides an international forum through its annual yearbook,
Mobility in History (“
MIH“), and the biannual
Journal of Transport History (“
JTH,” published by SAGE), as well as discounted subscription to the journals
Transfers and
Mobilities. We connect international researchers, institutions, and museums through our regular newsletter, listserv, and annual meetings in Europe, North America and elsewhere.
T
2M also supports travel to meetings by new researchers; awards for scholarly essays (the John Scholes Prize) and oral presentations (the Barker and Robbins Prize); and collaborative educational efforts with museums and other educational organizations.
Membership of T2M ensures a vital connection with individuals and institutions around the world interested in transport, traffic, or mobility. Membership Benefits include:
