Theme Group 2 – Technology and Culture within Mobility

History of Mobility is a reviving field and has been studied from a large variety of approaches. Within T2M there is room for a theoretical based Theme Group, which will help evolve the field of mobility history.

We are proposing the creation of a new theme group called Technology and Culture within Mobility. The goal of this Theme Group is to study the history of mobility with a focus on technology and culture, and also what is a meeting place between them, design. One of the ambitions is to explicitly bring the technology into the field of mobility history, using a contextualised approach.

After the creation of this new Theme Group, we would like to invite scholars (juniors and seniors) with research interests on the culture, technology and design of mobility, from networks such as those of historians of mobility and of historians of technology, amongst others.

As a starting point for our work as a Theme Group, we would like to create a platform for discussion, which will include an on-line forum (through the creation of a special area within the T2M website) and will be done in other ways, like meetings.

Another proposal is to organise annual Summer Schools, in which we will invite senior scholars to give lectures and give junior scholars a change to present and discuss their work.

As noted in the September 2005 T2M Newsletter, Theme Groups are an important tool to foster transnational mobility history. We believe that the Technology  and Culture within Mobility Theme Group can function as such a tool by bringing together international researchers, both senior and junior, who share the same research interests.
